Small business owners are brilliant at what they do. They can create amazing products, wire a house, cut hair, train a horse, or run a beauty treatment with their eyes closed.
Marketing, though?
That's a different skill set entirely - and there's no shame in admitting it's not your forte. Here are five signs it might be time to get some help.
1. You're too busy to market, but your business is not busy enough
This is the classic small business trap: you're working hard, but work isn't consistent. You're either slammed or worryingly quiet, with no real middle ground. That feast-and-famine cycle indicates a marketing problem. A steady pipeline of enquiries needs consistent, ongoing marketing - and that's hard to do when you're also doing the actual job.
2. You're spending time on marketing but don't know if it's working
If you're paying for a website, boosting Facebook posts, or running ads - but you have no idea whether any of it is actually working - that's a problem. Good marketing is obvious. If you can't see the return on what you're doing, either the strategy is wrong, the execution is wrong, or both. When you don't have a marketing background, it can be a lot to even understand, let alone execute.
3. Your website hasn't been updated in years
If your website still shows your old logo, outdated prices, or services you no longer offer, it's actively working against you. An outdated website doesn't just look unprofessional, it actively loses you customers who can't find the information they need. Not to mention the impact and opportunity cost of neglected SEO (consistent website optimisation is the key to steady long term business).
4. Your competitors are more visible than you online
Google your main service in your local area. If your competitors are appearing in the map results, on the first page and all over social media (while you're nowhere to be seen) that's business going to them instead of you. Major flag that there’s work to be done.
5. You know you should be doing more, but you don't know what
If you've got a vague sense that you should be doing something with social media, SEO, or your website, but every time you sit down to tackle it you don't know where to start - that paralysis is costing you real money and business. A good marketing partner takes that uncertainty away and gives you a clear, prioritised plan that takes the weight off.
Getting marketing help doesn't mean handing over control of your business. It means working with people who take your growth as seriously as you do - and know exactly how to achieve it.
